3 Basic Yet Most Important Blogger Settings Users Mostly Ignore

2 min read

A vast number of bloggers use Google’s Blogger for running their blogs and if you are reading this tutorial, then you are also most likely using blogspot for hosting your writing. Though creating a blog with Blogger is extremely simple and you can bring your blog live within a minute or two, but a very big number of blogspot users don’t configure some important settings for their blogs which considerably decide blog’s ranking in search engines. So today I decided to bring awareness among you about three most important settings for Blogger which need to be configured properly to ensure that your blog performs well in SERPs.

blogger-configuration

Configuration 1# Write a Good Description for Your Blog: Soon after creating your blog, go to Settings>Basics and then edit and write a brief but nice description for your blog. The description’s snippet will be shown on SERPs for your blog’s main URL. In description, use your main keywords and craft a beautiful description for both humans and search engines.

This settings is necessary to be configured as it tells both your visitors and search engines that what is the main theme of your blog. So write a good description for your blog to ensure that it is optimized for search engines.

Configuration #2 Enable Search Description: Yet another important setting you need to configure is enabling the search description for your blog. To enable this section, go to Settings>Search Preferences and then paste the description you wrote earlier in first step or write a new (similar) description. Enabling this section will show a box on post editor where you will be able to write a short description for your post later which helps in gaining higher rankings in SERPs.

Above configuration will enable a “Description Box” on your blog’s post editor. Whenever you will composing a new post or will be editing an old post, write a few introductory words about your post in the box. Use the keywords there in the description to get most out of it. The description will be shown on SERPs, thus it will attract both search engines and visitors to your blog if you manage to use keywords properly to craft a good meta description for your post.

Configuration 3# Bring Post Title Before Blog Title: By default, Blogger shows the blog title before post title and it isn’t good for a proper SEO as your main keywords of the post are pushed back and even your all keywords contained in post title may hide on SERPs if your blog title is lengthy. If you are using a modern WordPress adapted theme on your Blogger blog, then this setting might be optimized there already. If you are not sure either this setting is configured or not, visit any of your posts URL and see the title in browser’s title bar. You will come to know either your post title comes first or not. If it isn’t, configure it.

To make your post title appear before blog title in SERPs, you need to modify some piece of code in your blog’s template. To do so, go to Template section and edit HTML of your template. Then search and find <title><data:blog.pageTitle/></title> by pressing Ctrl+F. After finding this tag, replace this line with below provide code and save the changes.

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == &quot;index&quot;'>
<title><data:blog.title/></title>
<b:else/>
<title><data:blog.pageName/></title>
</b:if>

replace-code

After replacing the default title code with above provided one, save the changes and visit your post URL again. Now just the post title will appear which is super-optimized for search engines.

So these were three basic but very important settings to be configured for a Blogger blog. If you were unaware about these settings before, then configure your blogspot blog now to ensure that it performs well in search engines and you receive the traffic for which you have built your blog.
