Blogger Domain-How to Setup Custom Domain on Blogger Blogs

3 min read

If you have read about importance of custom domain for Blogger blogs, then you must have understood that how much a custom domain is necessary for Blogger blogs. Now in this tutorial, I am going to tell you how to use a custom domain with your Blogger blog. Below steps will describe how to setup your own domain on a Blogger blog.

How Do I Setup My Own Domain on Blogger

First of all, you need to register a domain name for your blog. It usually costs around 10$-30$ a year. GoDaddy registers domains on even cheaper price and you can register a .com domain with them for only 7$ per year. The second benefit of registering your domain with GoDaddy is that you don’t face any challenge in mapping your domain to your Blogger blog.

GoDaddy provides an easy to configure DNS setup tool through which you can point your domain to your blog very easily. If you go for any other domain registrar, still it isn’t a tough task to map your domain to your Blogger blog and it can be done very easily from control panel of your domain which is provided by your domain registrar. If you are ready to replace your .blogspot Blogger domain with your own domain, then follow below simple instructions.

1. Buy a Custom Domain for Your Blog Through Blogger

If you can pay through Google Checkout, then it is extremely easy to buy and setup a custom domain for your blog. To go with this setup method, log-in to Blogger dashboard, select your blog and then go to Settings. In Basic section under Settings, you will find “+Add a custom domain Point your own registered domain to your blog.” as shown in the below screenshot:

setup-custom-domain-for-blogger

Click on +Add a custom domain link there and in next screen, type your desired domain name in the box which you are going to use for your Blogger blog and then check availability of the domain name either it is available to register or not.

If your selected domain is available and hasn’t registered yet by anyone else, then you can proceed with the registration. If the domain name isn’t available, search for any other domain name of your choice.

Once your desired domain name is available to register, proceed with the registration by clicking  Continue to registration button. In the next screen, provide your contact details and other information and proceed to Google Checkout. Once you pay for your domain name and its registration completes, you will be guided through the rest of setup procedure.

Using a Domain Registered With a Third Party

Blogger doesn’t insist you to by domains through it always. You can register your domain with any domain registrar and can use it for your Blogger blog. If you choose to register your domain through a third party domain registrar, then follow the below steps:

Register Your Domain: Register your domain with your selected registrar. You registrar will send you log-in details for your domain control panel. After the registration process completes, follow below instructions:

Obtain CNAMERecords for Your Blog: You need to update CNAME values under your domain DNS. To get these values for your blog, sign-in to your Blogger dashboard, select your blog and go to settings. Under Basic section in Settings, click on +Add a custom domain name and then Switch to advanced settings

domain-blogger-advanced-settings

In the next screen, type in your domain name in the box which you have registered recently and click on Settings Instructions. If the page asks to confirm that you are navigating away, accept it by clicking Leave Page

In next window, select On a top-level domain (www.example.com).option from the two. Now domain verification and other details will appear below on the concerned screen. I am sharing a screenshot but remember that these values are unique for each setup. So copy details from the screen which are generated for your blog. I have highlighted the values which are needed to redirect your domain to your Blogger blog.

cname-details-blogger

Now you need to update your domain’s DNS with these details. To do this, log-in to your domain control panel using the credentials provided by your domain registrar. In domain control panel, select DNS setting and add the two CNAME records using the details which you have obtained from Google in above step. Add CNAME details as mentioned below:

1. Add the first CNAME record by typing WWW in host field and ghs.google.com in destination field
2. Add the second CNAME record by pasting the shorter domain verification value as host and the longer one as destination. In my case, my CNAME records will be added as below:

CNAME 1

host: www.supportivehands.net

destination: ghs.google.com

CNAME 2
host: SBYCL7V25JN.supportivehands.net
destination: gv-B&JO3N6NEJ5NIEP55Z7GNCFJUTAHPY73ZRYRWF5CT23OXPTIPJIAS.domainverify.googlehosted.com

After adding the CNAME records, save your settings and let your settings to propagate across the web. It will usually take between one day to 3 days before your domain is pointed to Blogger. Keep checking by typing your domain name in browser after intervals that either it is redirected or not. Once the settings are propagated, your domain will start working and you will see the 404 (Not found) error at Google servers like below screenshot.

domain-propagated

Now go to your Blogger dashboard again, select your blog and go to its Settings. Under Basic Settings, select +Add a custom domain and then switch to advanced settings

advanced-domain-setup

On next screen, type in your domain name in the box and save your settings. You are all done!!

custom-domain-complete

Once your domain starts working on your blog, you need to to perform one more simple task. It will redirect your naked domain (yourdomain.com) to your full domain (www.yourdomain.com). It can be done by adding ANAMES also but this step is easier and convenient than adding ANAMES, so I haven’t discussed the procedure of adding ARECORDS. To perform this task, log-in to your Blogger dashboard, select your blog and go to its settings. Now you will see your domain under Basic Settings. Edit it to direct naked domain to full domain:

second-last-setp-domain-setup

In the next screen, check the box saying Redirect yourdomain.com to www.yourdomain.com and save your settings. Now you have performed all steps for mapping your own domain to your Blogger blog.

I haven’t shared screenshots for DNS configuration in domain control panel because each domain registrar provides you a domain control panel with different options.

If you still can’t redirect your domain to your Blogger blog and need help, then you can ask us to do it. We will help you in setting up custom domain on your Blogger blog.

  4. bro, i just recently bought a domain name through blogger and paid it on google checkout, how many days till the whole transition thing completes? when i click view blog, it directs to my blog’s new domain name but it still not up, oops google chrome cannot find.

  5. its still not working, its giving me message “Your blog is in transition

Your blog’s new address is http://www.epicfeedtime.com/. Since it takes time for this new address to be available all over the Internet, you can still get to it at http://epicfeedtime.blogspot.com.

Your new address should work for everyone after at most 3 days. At that time we will redirect your readers from your old address to the new one.” everytime i click view blog

  6. Hi I have added a domain and it says that it redirects me when I just want a new domain for my blog. Thanks

    1. Hi Jobey, you need to configure DNS of your purchased domain name and then point it to your Blogger blog by following above discussed steps.

  7. I purchased my domain name for my blogspot blog through Blogger yesterday. I received a confirmation email saying my domain has been registered, but no instructions on how to get my domain name to work or point to my blog. The email did give me a link to set up an administrator account on google apps. It didn’t work so I had to go to google help to find an end around for that, but I got it done. But I still have no idea how to get my domain name to work or to get it to point to my blog. Any ideas or help? Thanks!

    1. Hi Stephani, if you have created the administrator account, then the domain should start working automatically, as DNS settings are set for Blogger by default on domains purchased through Blogger interface. If you are still facing any difficulties, please post your URL and let me know more.

  8. Hello there !
I want to buy a custom domain for my blogger’s blog.
I have the following questions –

    1. how to pay or options in google checkout ???
    2. when i move my site does internal links automatically changes to my new website or should i have to do manually ???
    3. what happens after 1 year has passed and i didnt pay for next year ???
    4. can u suggest a domain name for my blog. u can see my blog at my links in google + profile. (to avoid spam).
    Thank you…
    Awaiting reply eagerly

    1. Hi Bharath,

      1. You need to add money to Google Wallet first and then can pay with Google Checkout

      2. You don’t need to change internal linking. All links are redirected permanently to your new domain automatically and ranking is preserved

      3. When you don’t pay after the period of registration expires, the domain is suspended until you pay for renewal

      4. Let me check your blog link and will suggest you a domain name. You can post your current blog URL also. You aren’t a spammer 🙂

  9. I believe one should only pivot to custom domain and hosting only when they have enough traffic and planning to take the blogging stuff seriously or even when they’re in mood to sell their blog.

But recently I came across this start-up called WEBSFORT which helps you in listing your blogspot or wordpress or tumblr hosted blogs also(one with no custom domain and hosting). Thus once a suitable buyer is found then the blog owner could easily invest few dollars on hosting and domain and sell it to the person. This does not violate the blog selling policies either as no actual transaction is being taken place on the WebsFort platform.

I hope this might help a plenty of bloggers who wanted to sell their third party hosted blogs or for those who want to get an idea about their blog analytics and valuation.

  10. i have bought domain from namecheap.com
    getting error
We have not been able to verify your authority to this domain. Error 12.

  11. hi,
i want to buy 9 domains from godaddy and 2 baby hosting plans from hostgator , but cant resolve following:
1- how to pay them ? do they accept HBL VISA credit card?
2- Step by step guide to enter necessary data in order to not miss any important one.
3- any best promotions i can avail?

    thanks

    1. Hi Ali,
About HBL’s credit card, I’m not sure. You can use Standard Chartered Bank’s debit or credit card for purchases on GoDaddy and HostGator. Additionally, Hostgator accepts payments via Western Union also. Contact their support via live chat or email and they will assist you.

If nothing works for you, I can help you purchasing domains and hosting by paying with PayPal. Let me know if you need any help.

  12. Hello Rehmat,

Maybe you can shed some insight to a current issue I’m having.

When I go to my domain (that has been properly registered/connected with my blogger) It redirects me to the google sign in page.

To access your blogs, sign in with your Google Account.
The new Blogger requires a Google Account to access your blogs.”

Do you know why that is? Any insight will be helpful.

    Thank you

    1. Nevermind, I have figured it out. On blogger I had to change my “Blog Readers” to anyone and not just for those who have to log in.

  13. Hi,

I am going to try and build another blog, with a free domain! But then use one of my own personal domains to it!

I just plan on going into settings and whatever and then clicking the add “custom domain name” i hope that will work!

Also does anyone know if i can sell my blog on flippa or Ebay?

    Cheers Guys!

    1. Hi lan,
Blogger blogs are hard to sell. If you are planning to sell it, set it up on WordPress, it will bring good price. And just adding domain to Blogger might not work. Configure DNS for your particular blog correctly.

  14. lovely piece, i totally used this piece to start my domain registration process just a while ago. i have bought the domain name and pointed the ip adresses and cnames to my blogger blog, the browser is already giving me error 404 and i believe it will take me a couple of days for my site to show up. i registered http://www.tipcyclopedia.com

i just cant understand why blogger is still showing me ”error12, we have not been able to verify your authority for this domain” when i try to add my domain name by advanced settings even after some hours of saving my settings. can anyone help me please?

    1. Hi Adoga,
Have you configured the DNS properly? In settings section of domain, click on “Setup Instructions” and then get CNAME values from there. You need to use these specific values to configure DNS, so the domain will work properly. Let me know if you need any help.

  15. yes i have gone to setup instructions, i got a www and ghs.google.com and two other codes which i had to add myself at godaddy dns dashboard. i clicked save and it loaded for a short time and saved. i just dont know why im getting that message from blogger after all this

    1. Then go to Google Webmaster Tools, log in with same blogger account log in details and then add your custom domain to Google Webmaster Tools. Google will instruct you how to verify your domain. You will get it done after that..

  16. I have read the article

    I have questions

Q1.After doing everything above,if I will type mysite.blogspot.com in url then will it redirect me to mysite.com?

Q2.I have heard that blogger has strict policies. One wrong step and your blog will be deleted. So after doing above things and pointing the domain, will i get rid of all those strict policies? Will i avoid the danger of getting blog deleted?

Q3.What are the advantages of setting up the custom domain on blogger?

    1. Here are the answers:
      1. Yes, your blogspot URL will be redirected (301) to your custom domain yoursite.com will automatically open when you will enter yoursite.blogspot.com

      2. No, after adding the custom domain, your blog is still hosted on Blogger and you need to follow their TOS.

      3. The advantage is that you can move your blog elsewhere if Blogger deletes it.. Secondly, your blog will look more professional with a custom domain..

Remember that if you setup a custom domain sooner and do off-page SEO for it, your new domain will get ranked and you will retain the ranking even after Google deletes your Blogger blog.. You can read more advantages of a custom domain here: Importance of Custom Domain

      1. 3. The advantage is that you can move your blog elsewhere if Blogger deletes it.. Secondly, your blog will look more professional with a custom domain.

        how?

how will i recover the data and traffic from the deleted blog?

I guess it is better to buy hosting at anyother place, because if you just buy domain name and point your blog(from blogger) to it.Google can still interfere and delete the blog.

  17. I purchased my domain name for my blogspot blog through Blogger already in May. I set up an administrator account but I still have no idea how to get my domain name to work or to get it to point to my blog. Can you help me?

    1. Hi,
If you have gotten the administrator account, then you should be able to point it Blogger by configuring its DNS. But the domain should automatically redirect, as domain purchased through Blogger are automatically configured. If you can’t figure it out, add me on Skype: supportivehands
      I’ll guide you.

  18. Hi rehmat your article is easy to understand and with your help i customize my blog with top leveldomain .com thank you

Here,i have a small problem after i registered with domain name next day i applied for adsense they given reply with sad news that difficult site navigation

    Further detail:
Difficult site navigation: During our review of your website, we found
your site difficult to navigate. Potential navigation issues include:
redirects, pages behind a login or restricted access, broken links,
excessive pop-ups, dialers, and pages under construction or not yet
    launched.

Can you please help me how to get rid of this ,

    1. Hi Sunny, thank you for appreciation 🙂
To make navigation easier over your blog, build internal linking. For that purpose, edit your posts and put links from one posts to other on across your blog. Also build a good navigation menu. BTW can you mention your blog URL? After that, I will be able to guide you in a better way.

        1. You are welcome Sunny :). I checked your site. Its main navigation is poor.. Move Contact us, privacy, sitemap and about us page links to footer and put some labels in main navigation. View this screehshot: http://prntscr.com/1rdigl

In addition, put links from one post to another. If you can’t edit old posts, do it for newer ones. But a good main navigation menu should solve your issue.

  19. Thanks for your reply Rehmat can please suggest me a good blogger template it will be more helpfull for me . I will change labels, pages and posts in your prescribed template .

    Thanks in advance rehmat

  20. There is no Buy Domain option in the settings
I don’t know what to do?
How to Purchase the new domain for my site.
Any other option you can post it below.

    1. Hi Perambur, Blogger has stopped offering domain purchase from within its interface. You can now buy any domain with a third party like NameCheap.com, GoDaddy or Whois.com. Namecheap.com was promoting a special offer. Visit https://www.namecheap.com/promos/exclusive-promo-0-98-domain-wedfcv.aspx and see if the offer is still active. You can get a .net, .com or .org domain with some other TLDs for just $0.98. Register the domain and modify its DNS to get it working with Blogger. If you need help in setting up the domain, I can help you out.

  21. Hi Rehmat

Connecting and pointing my blog in Blogger to my Domain Name from Go Daddy?
You’re a genius, thanks so much for you help…you the best !!!
    Woohoo….is working 🙂

  22. Hi Rehmat

Thank you so much for you help. I followed your instruction this morning and it is now working with the Domain Name. I really appreciate it.

If you don’t mind, I have another question. When I google my domain name-thewineblog.info, it point/take me straight to my photos page but not my front page->Welcome to my blog.

Do you know what I should do on my blog?

    Cheers
    James

  23. Hi Rehmat
I hope you are well and just wondering if you have received my download template for my blog on ‘add comment’. Unfortunately for me, it is still not working and hope you can help.

    thanks
    James

    1. Hi James,
I was away for a while, so sorry for delayed response.. Yes your template was in my inbox. I’ll be checking it. Please resend it to ensure that I don’t face any difficulty in finding it.

  24. Hey Rehmat bro
can we do the same thing with out wordpress blog?

pointing our registered domain towards our blog http://www.blog.wordpress.com
    ?

I want to point a registered domain to it
    and then apply for wordads

as we can’t display ads on wordpress blogs

    1. WordPress.com doesn’t allow you to use domains registered with third parties. You need to register a domain from within WordPress.com interface where the domain costs around $18 per year.. And you can’t monetize a free WordPress.com blog

  25. what about you?
did you register your own domain and then bought hosting?

Can you suggest me any best plan?
I have checked the baby plan of hostgator
    I liked it
should i really go for it?

    1. Yes, I first registered domain and then bought hosting.. How many visitors are there on your blog? If you have to host only one blog, go for baby plan. Consider signing up using my affiliate link. It will earn me a commission. Use supportive as coupon code for 25% discount 🙂
      Here it is: Hostgator Signup

please help me on this, thanks in advance.

    1. Hi Kiran,
Here are the answers for you:
      1. You can write the posts from Blogger’s editor as you do now. Nothing will change after adding the domain
      2. You need to just register the domain. It costs around $10 per year or less… Register the domain, redirect it to your blog and use it. You don’t need any hosting
      3. No, you don’t need to change anything in template
      4. You don’t need to bring any changes in Google ads code. Yes if you have chosen only selected websites in AdSense dashboard to show your ads, you may need to add your new domain in AdSense interface to allowed websites list. By default, AdSense ads are allowed to be shown on all websites
      5. No, any mistake in configuration will not result in any damage of AdSense or blog

I hope it helps… Let me know if you need any help in domain configuration..

  30. Dear Brother, I have a problem and need your help regarding custom domain registration with my blog at blogger, I have registered a domain on PKNIC “www.ghazinaama.com.pk” and associate the given CNAMES by blogger at PKNIC website against this domain name as well, but blogger not verifying it, . Thanks in Advance. JazakAllah

    1. Hi Zaman bro, did the problem resolve? I just checked your domain and got 404 error. It means you haven’t fixed it yet. Can you share screenshot of your domain’s control panel? I’ll be able to instruct you better.

  31. Hey rehmat bro

I have provided my CNIC copies to Hostgator

how long will it take to get verified now ?

I have recieved an email regarding ticket

    1. Means if you don’t provide document proofs, they may suspend your account, but they don’t suspend the account instantly. If you fail to provide the documents within a week or more, then they suspend the account till you provide them proofs.

  32. alright thanks

I have provided my CNIC copies , with English Translation of my address

    just like you did

  33. Right now when I visit my site , it redirects me to suspended page and says

    Webmaster Please Contact [email protected]

Do I need to contact them or they are working on my verification and my site will be automatically available after 24-48 hours ?

    My Ticket status is OPEN

  34. Hi, it’s been more than 24 hours that I have added a custom domain but blogger is still redirecting my blog to google home page instead of my blog, what could be wrong?

  35. Hi Rehmat, One thing is still not clear to me, if I want a third level domain site, like this one – http://mirthconnect.isarp.com – which is on English, to be visible in non-English speaking European or Asia regions, should I start blogging on their language? I wonder how.

    1. Hi Samir,
Maintaining too many blogs is somehow hard. It is better to integrate Google Transalate on your main blog. Visitors will translate with the help of that widget. If you want to start another blog on a second or third-level domain, that’s possible.

  36. Sir if we set a custom domain to a blog then google will remove adsence from that blog, is this true? because i have a hosted account and that only run on third party sites, sir please send men the answer please or if any one can help please mail me [email protected]

    1. Hi Rana,
No, AdSense will still stay active as previous links and rankings are shifted to the newer domain. If you have an active AdSense account on your blogspot domain, then custom domain will not create any issues. Go ahead and get it without any fear.
